The Theresa May of Texas
"So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth. Because you say, ‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing’—and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked—"
Revelation 3:16-17
Having spent most of the last week out of state, something strikes: The refusal of center-right governments to deliver on promises made to voters is not unique to Texas.
The same thing is happening in Great Britain. The Brits voted to exit the European Union. They elected a Tory government to implement that mandate. That Tory government has steadfastly refused to carry out the promises they made to voters.
Similarly, Texans voted last fall to reign in the property taxes. They voted, furthermore, for conservative governance. Maybe margins were thinner than previous cycles. The message, nevertheless, remains.
Yet Texas’ elected political leadership, led by Greg Abbott, refuses to implement the agenda on which they campaigned. The truth, of course, is that similar to pro-Brussles Tories, plenty of Texas Republicans like the status quo. Unfortunately, Greg Abbott, just like Theresa May, is either unable or unwilling to do anything about it.
It’s pathetic; unfortunately, we have no idea what to do.
Bottom Line: Can you come up with a better comparison?!?
