"Local Control" vs. Local Liberty

"Dishonest scales are an abomination to the Lord,
But a just weight is His delight."
Proverbs 11:1

TPPF Policy Orientation: Does the State of Texas have the authority to smack down local governments that overstep their boundaries in ways that overwhelm personal liberty?!?

Sen. Bob Hall (R - Rockwall/Dallas Counties):

  • Foundation of our country is the states.
  • States formed BOTH Federal and local govts.
  • Let's remove regulations on taxis instead of adding them to Uber.
  • Fracking bans take property rights away without compensation.
  • Re: Property taxes -- At no level do we have a revenue problem, we have a  spending problem.
  • "If we have a law on the books it needs to be enforced."
  • "One more law is not the answer to solving a law when it isn't being enforced."
Luke Metzger (Environment Texas):
  • Something, something "plastic pollution."
  • Your property rights end when they impact me.
  • 12 cities have passed bag bans.
  • Some overwrought anti-fracking "health impacts" diatribe.
  • Local governments "filling the void."
    • "Last line of defense."
Rep. Matt Rinaldi (R - Dallas):
  • Hypocritical when local control advocates abandon it when it suits their agenda.
    • eg. Texting while driving.
  • "We have never believed the liberty does not trump local control."
  • City governments are "very influenced by amped up groups of people."
  • State should intervene when:
    • You create an "unworkable patchwork" of local regulations.
    • Does it implicate a liberty interest?!?
      • eg. Bag bans inhibit right of contract.
  • "I was co-author of a bill that would ban taxpayer-funded lobbying."
