#atxcouncil: Shenanigans an' stuff....

"Talk no more so very proudly;
Let no arrogance come from your mouth,
For the Lord is the God of knowledge;
And by Him actions are weighed."
1 Saumel 2:3

The TL;DR version of last nights council meeting is that they punted for a week on soccer and they adopted misleading ballot language related to the ballot.  Expect lawsuits on both.  The audit related lawsuit will probably have been filed by the time you read this.

On soccer, there will be a special called meeting next Wednesday to consider members' amendments.  At the end of that meeting, they will take a final vote.  The stadium proposal will likely pass 7-4 (6-5 also possible).  Then the lawsuits begin....

Our testimony:

Highlights:
  • "I could list probably 17 or 18 different reasons why, at this point, I think this is a very misguided idea."
  • Stealing Columbus, OH's team is just wrong.
  • Unresolved issues related to taxes and lease terms.
  • Best argument we've heard against it came from a supporter who said "the numbers don't add up."
    • Note: One of them actually said it; it was about 20 minutes before we testified.
    • THAT'S THE PROBLEM.
  • "Very, very bad idea."
    • Note: LOL, not this council....
  • "If this turns out to be the obvious and predictable debacle it looks like right now, I would not want to own it."
  • Entire dias laughed at our joke about how they always ignore us.
On the audit, they did a whole bunch of shady stuff.  It was designed to protect the council members from having to take a vote on the audit.  There will be lawsuits.

Highlights:

  • We need clear, concise, easy to understand ballot language.
    • Note: LOL on the fact that they gave us the exact opposite.
  • On the audit ballot language, we reminded them that they just got sued over petition ballot language and lost.
    • Note: They chose to get sued again.
  • On the bond, we discussed how binding ballot language would make it harder to attack in a political campaign.
