Texas: Future Headquarters Of Bitcoin

Astonishing and exciting news about the convergence of BITCOIN and good economic policy in Texas:

When it comes to creating jobs, don’t mess with Texas. The state has had stronger job growth over the last 13 years than any of the other 49 states, and even though the state will soon have a new governor, Texas will continue to be poised as a leader in job growth, while other states stifle innovation with regulation.

Here’s why:
Texas has embraced companies with a clear regulatory environment and that is not just for big oil. Texas is home to a large aerospace industry and a booming technology sector that could take bitcoin to the moon. You may think California is the bitcoin capital of the world and it is in terms of investment and innovation, but bitcoin companies are considering moving from Silicon Valley to the Silicon Prairie and Silicon Hills for the lower costs of doing business and tax incentives. Texas is ranked 11th on the State Business Tax Climate Index for 2014, while California is 48th and New York is dead last.

Dustin Trammell, Bitcoin Venture Capitalist and entrepreneur, says that “Given the contradictory guidance regarding Bitcoin regulation that’s been provided by U.S. Federal agencies, and no desire by the Fed to settle the differences, how to handle Bitcoin is being worked out by some states.”

This is where the opportunity lies. While some states have said that virtual currency regulation already falls within the scope of existing regulations, others have suggested the need for new virtual currency specific regulations such as New York Department of Financial Services’ (DFS) BitLicense.

Many prominent figures and businesses in the Bitcoin community have already come out against Ben Lawsky, the unelected superintendent of New York’s Department of Financial Services, for his proposed BitLicense. These industry leaders and companies include Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire, Xapo CEO Wences Casares, Coinbase and Max Keiser, among more.

While New York seems to be pushing away bitcoin business, others states, like Texas, are seeing this as an opportunity to bring more jobs to their state.

Government:
Texas offers $19 billion in tax incentives to businesses, the highest of any state, and has low taxes. Last year, Texas recorded a 5.5 billion dollar budget surplus.

Greg Abbott, Texas’ Republican Gubernatorial Candidate, who is positioned to be the next governor, is accepting bitcoins for his campaign and will likely be one of the first governors to win an election accepting bitcoin.

“I made the decision to accept Bitcoin because I believe that it represents the free-market economic principles that make Texas a national leader in innovation and entrepreneurship. As Governor, I will keep taxes low, government small and reduce regulations so Texas’ booming technology sector will continue to flourish,” said Abbott.

Abbott is leading in the polls by a 12.6 percent margin, a sizable lead considering there is only one debate left on September 30. Abbott has served Texas as Attorney General since 2002 and knows the potential bitcoin can bring to his state.

Texas has a strong technology friendly history. Jack Kilby invented the integrated circuit while working at Texas Instruments in Dallas in 1958. Texas played a large part in the dot com era, and it hosts large technology companies like Dell and Texas Instruments. Texas can also support these businesses with a highly skilled workforce with the roughly 578,000 students enrolled in Texas’s 36 largest universities. These veterans from the dot com era along with a growing educated workforce will play a major role in Texas’s Bitcoin future.

US Representative Steve Stockman (TX-36) is also a public supporter of bitcoin. Rep. Stockman was the first Member of Congress to introduce a piece of Bitcoin legislation back in May 2014. The Virtual Currency Tax Reform Act aimed to treat virtual currencies as currency instead of property for federal tax purposes.

“It’s good to see Attorney General Abbott embrace virtual currencies like Bitcoin. It’s an emerging technology, and one that opens the doors for small businesses to sell globally. Texans have always embraced innovation. We created the modern economy by giving birth to the petroleum revolution, we led the world into the space age and now Texans are at the cutting edge of economic evolution,” said Rep. Stockman.

Bitcoiners:
Regardless of political affiliations, most bitcoiners would like to see the advancement of Bitcoin technology and the values Bitcoin represents. The fact that many political figures are taking their stances on Bitcoin by accepting seems promising.

“As a Bitcoin enthusiast living in Texas, I am encouraged when our leaders and representatives support Bitcoin and encourage the development of technologies based on the blockchain. Keeping regulations reasonable will insure Texas will be at the center of developing this new technology,” according to Paul Snow, President of the Texas Bitcoin Association.

While accepting bitcoin for political contributions is a great first step, what the Bitcoin community really wants and needs is smart regulation that promotes the acceptance and use of digital currencies. After all, actions speak louder than words.

“If a politician wants to be serious about promoting and normalizing using Bitcoin, he or she will introduce legislation which allows me to pay for my property taxes and parking tickets with it. That would be much more beneficial to me, the citizen taxpayer, instead of merely benefiting a candidate’s campaign,” said Tod Beardsley, Engineering Manager at Rapid7, Dogecoin Shibe.

Being able to pay taxes in bitcoin would certainly be a game-changer, but is not anywhere on the US government’s agenda. However, the Isle of Man’s chief executive of economic development said that residents of the Isle could soon be able to do just that.

Texas vs. New York
One thing is for sure: New York’s proposed BitLicense companies will look at Texas’ regulatory environment and lower cost of living, and set up business because of the reduced barriers to entry.

“In some cases, the contrast between these various laboratories of economics are becoming quite stark, such as between economically conservative and even libertarian leaning states like Texas versus states like the New-York-nanny-staters and their proposed BitLicense,” said Dustin Trammell, Bitcoin Venture Capitalist & entrepreneur.

There are a lot of applications bitcoin can be used for and Texas’s bitcoin community will surely take advantage of them. From financial services to solving problems associated with The Internet of Things, entrepreneurs are finding use cases for bitcoin wherever they can.

“Austin is home to quite a number of Bitcoin startups, and even one of the few established regional Bitcoin conferences, the Texas Bitcoin Conference held every March in Austin, Texas. We have the momentum here in Texas, and we want to build on that, not suppress it with counterproductive regulation,” according to Paul Snow.

One problem bitcoin can solve in Texas is to help the vast amount of the population that is unbanked. Texas is ranked fifth in the country for having the largest percentage of unbanked and underbanked residents: 11.7% of Texas’s population is unbanked and 24.1% is underbanked.

Republican Primary Statewide Endorsement List

We hadn't intended to post a statewide candidate list.  Enough people have asked us to do so, however, that we humbly oblige.   We are flattered and honored that you value our opinion.

Governor:  Greg Abbott

This is the easiest call on the list.  Rick Perry has been, on net, an outstanding Governor.  Greg Abbott has been a critical ally.  Where they differ, the differences favor Abbott.  While we urge Abbott to be much more confrontational with the legislature, maintaining the status quo Rick Perry bequeaths is already a big win.

Lt. Governor:  NO ENDORSEMENT.

Attorney General:  Ken Paxton (previously endorsed).

Continuing to nurse hurt feelings over something that happened three years ago, during a different era in Tea Party history, is insane; Vote Ken Paxton.

Comptroller:  Debra Medina

This is the toughest call of the 2014 cycle.  In our view, Debra Medina is the candidate whose natural talents align closest with the duties of comptroller.  As Texas' chief financial officer, the Comptroller deals with money.  A long time Ron Paul confidant, Medina has a knack for fiscal policy we've always admired.  We expect Medina to be a gigantic pain in the ass to a lot of people who deserve one.

That being said, many people we know and respect support Glenn Hegar.  That's fine, Glenn Hegar is a good man who was very helpful behind the scenes.  If he wins, he will perform solidly.

Unlike Debra Medina, there is an actual Joe Straus lieutenant in this race.  Cahnman's Musings would prefer not to help build his name recognition or website traffic.  Empower Texans has everything you need to know here.

Land Commissioner:  David Watts Jr.

The current Land Commissioner has abused his office in a way that makes it impossible to support his campaign for Lt. Gov.  David Watts Jr. is the only candidate to address this abuse.  While we're discussing this race, Cahnman's Musings has also had enough of politicians named George Bush, thank you very much.

Agriculture Commissioner:  Sid Miller

Sid Miller isn't perfect.  Unfortunately, the alternatives are a buffoon, a Democrat, or Tommy Merritt.  We reserve the right to support Kinky Friedman in the general.

Railroad Commissioner: Wayne Christian

Despite the name, the Texas Rail Road Commission is the primary regulator of Texas booming energy sector.  To be honest, we wanted Wayne Christian to run for U.S. Senate, but he's running for Railroad Commission instead.  As commissioner, Wayne Christian will protect fracking and anger the business as usual crowd.

U.S. Senate: Steve Stockman (previously endorsed)

Last week, John Cornyn re-enforced everything we knew.  While good people disagree on the best alternative, the objective this round is only to hold Cornyn under 50%.  Personally, we believe Steve Stockman is a pest similar to (retired NHL star) Esa Tikkannen, which is exactly what the U.S. Senate needs.

Texas Supreme Court: Re-elect ALL incumbents

This is the Jeremiah 17:9 race of this cycle.

Over the past two months, there's been a Democrat-financed whisper campaign against incumbent Texas Supreme Court Justices Nathan Hecht, Phil Johnson, and Jeff Brown.  Cahnman's Musings was offered this story as an exclusive last December.  We were astonished when the person who fed us this story admitted the purpose was to embarrass Rick Perry.

Fortunately, the truth has emerged.  Anyone who supports the challengers is, at best, a useful idiot for Steve Mostyn. It's a shame certain people chose to permanently tarnish thier credibility.

Stockman gains 22 points in latest poll; Cornyn well under 50

Human Events commissions a poll in the United States Senate Race:

The No.2 Republican in the Senate is polling below the 50 percent threshold in the party’s March 4 primary that he needs to clear in order to avoid a May 10 runoff, according to a Feb. 10-12 Human Events/Gravis poll of 729 registered Republicans.

Sen. John Cornyn (R.-Texas), the GOP Whip in the upper chamber has the approval 49 percent of those questioned and 43 percent preferred him to main challenger Rep. Stephen E. Stockman (R.-Texas), who polled 28 percent, said Doug Kaplan, the president of Gravis Marketing, the Florida-based firm that conducted the poll with both live callers to cell phones and automated calls to landlines. The poll has a margin of error of 3.6 percent.

“These are dangerous numbers for Cornyn, because they show that despite his power in the Senate and his familiarity with the voters, he has not yet made the sale,”

The Cornyn campaign was given the poll results three days before the deadline and asked for comment for this story. Campaign spokesman Drew Brandwie said the campaign would respond, but no response was received.

The other Republicans on primary ballot are: Chris Mapp, Dwayne Stovall, Linda Vega, Curt Cleaver, Reid Reasor and Ken Cope. A run off would between the top two vote getters.

Stockman said he is energized about the primary fight, but he is distressed by the personal attacks from Cornyn’s campaign and an independent political action committee that shares the 45 North Hill Drive address in Warrenton, Va., with a Karl Rove’s American Crossroads Super PAC.

“The Cornyn campaign must have inside poll numbers that scare them,” the congressman said. “They are throwing everything at me, including things I did 20 years ago, before I became a Christian.”

Donny Ferguson, a spokesman for the Stockman campaign, said “The buzzards are circling around Cornyn’s campaign office. A runoff election is a death sentence for an incumbent.”

Stockman only started his campaign less than 90 days ago and is growing rapidly, he said.

“This is why Cornyn refuses to release his internal poll numbers,” he said.

“The only thing holding Congressman Steve Stockman back is that 55 percent of Republican primary voters aren’t familiar with him,” he said.

“In fact, this poll shows meteoric growth in support for Congressman Steve Stockman, who only started running less than 90 days ago.” Ferguson said, “Also, this poll was taken before voters learned Cornyn voted to raise Obama’s debt limit. That vote created a new, larger explosion of opposition to Cornyn that he’s struggling to contain.”

If there was a run off, because it is held in May there would be time for Stockman to ramp up a more active campaign and beat Cornyn, he said. “Cornyn really needs to win this primary on the fourth of March.”

A few thoughts:

• Stockman's phenomenal growth -- In the last poll we saw, back in December, Stockman was at 6%.  Gaining 22 points in two months can reasonably be described as Cruz-esque.  Remember, Ted Cruz also required a run-off.

• Stovall not polled -- Cornyn's numbers are even worse when you realize that the second credible opponent in the race wasn't even included in the poll.  We suspect Stovall takes the overwhelming majority of the 'Undecided' vote in this poll.  That being said, Stovall's dishonest temper tantrum in response to this poll isn't helpful.

• Cornyn's ineffective advertising -- Since October, it has been impossible to listen to Glenn Beck or Rush Limbaugh's radio shows without constant ads from Cornyn.  He's still stuck at 43.  Personally, we wonder if Cornyn's incessant commercial blitzkrieg has backfired.

• Money is irrelevant
  
• Attorney General's race -- Given that folks incurred the cost to conduct this poll, we wish they'd polled the AG race as well.

Stockman Leads; Cornyn sits passively

From last night's State of the Union:

"Tonight I left early after hearing how the President is further abusing his Constitutional powers," Stockman told the Dallas Morning News in a statement. "I could not bear to watch as he continued to cross the clearly-defined boundaries of the Constitutional separation of powers." Needless to say, I am deeply disappointed in the tone and content of tonight’s address."

Stockman has made no secret of his problems with the president, but he does seem to enjoy the media spectacle of the State of the Union. Last year, he invited rocker and Obama critic Ted Nugent to the speech; this year, he invited Chad Henderson, a student who embarrassed the media by telling reporters he had enrolled in Obamacare when he, in fact, had not.

"After five years in office Obama refuses to admit his policies have failed," he said. "He instead demands we double down on the bitter class warfare that has left Americans jobless and hopeless. Obama’s plan for higher taxes and more spending is a blueprint for perpetual poverty. The last thing America needs is more of the Democrats’ class warfare that has left our economy a barren landscape."

John Cornyn, by contrast, gave us toothless lip service....

History Lesson: How Steve Stockman beat a 21-term incumbent

From a paper copy of the November 21, 1994 issue of Time Magazine we came across:

Stockman was a pro-gun, pro-school prayer sometime house painter and occasional accountant.  The most effective element of his platform was simply not being 21 term Congressman Jack Brooks who, if he had been re-elected, would have been the most senior member of the House.

Stockman, 37, didn't earn a college degree until 1990 and worked sporadically while raising money in the conservative Churches of east Texas for a campaign that would spend little more than $100,000.  But his limitations were a virtue because his target was so big -- and so maculate.  Jack Brooks, an ex-Marine who chomped on a cigar in his seat as chairman of the House Judiciary Committee long after the ashtrays were removed, could be a poster child for term limits.  More liberal than his east Texas constituents...he had hung tenaciously to office, power, perks and pork by fiercely protecting his constituents love of guns, rice subsidies, and the death penalty.

But Brooks' last grab for a slab of bacon proved too much for his sated constituency.  After he managed to get $10 million for the Jack Brooks Criminal Justice Center at Brooks' alma mater Lamar College slipped into the crime bill, voters saw pork for the bad financial bargain it is -- two dollars in federal taxes for every one that might come back to the district in the form of pork.  Stockman, who had been trounced by Brooks in 1992, saw his chance and tried again.  Some Republicans in Texas ignored him as a wild man [Author's Note: History Repeats itself.].  (Stockman unfurled posters that said FIGHT CRIME, SHOOT BACK.)  But he found ardent support among the pro-lifers, term-limit advocates, and gun owners, angry at Brooks' vote for the crime bill.  And the giant fell: Brooks won only 46% of the vote.

History Lesson: How Stockman won in 2012

Last year, immediately following his surprise victory in the CD-36 race, Steve Stockman sat down with Human Events to share best practices and lessons learned:

“Well, you’ll hear a lot of ‘Stockman was lucky’ and similar stuff — just don’t believe it,” the Republican nominee in Texas’ 36th District told us. “I could not have done it without all the hard-working, grass-roots volunteers. Believe me, we had them — young conservatives who came into an old motorcycle shop, worked the precincts and made phone calls, slept on the floor, and ate MREs [Army rations] for their three meals. There’s nothing like volunteers who believe in a candidate and a cause.”

But, he insisted, “the candidate has to believe in something to attract and motivate those kind of supporters.” Recalling his good-as-Goldwater voting record (American Conservative Union rating: 100 percent) while serving in the House from 1994-96, Stockman said “we talked about our support for the right to keep and bear arms. Our yard signs said I was ‘NRA-endorsed’ We embraced social issues such as abortion and talked a lot about my pro-life record and support for traditional marriage. We were conservatives and proud of it.”

When we pointed out that Stockman’s run-off opponent, financial planner Stephen Takach, also embraced those positions and agreed with him on the immediate repeal of Obamacare, the former congressman interrupted and said: “Excuse me. Those positions went up on his website after May 28, when he was facing me in the run-off. Up to that point — and we photographed it — his website never mentioned issues like that and he spoke primarily that he was a businessman who could create jobs.”

Did the support of national conservative organizations pack a punch in the primary? Stockman shot back: “You bet. And we sought them and used them. The NRA, Gun Owners of America, Citizens United, all were for us. And, while we couldn’t afford television, their support allowed us to do mailings, and reach the conservative base.” He also cited entertainer Pat Boone, the spokesman for the 60 Plus Seniors Association, cutting a robocall for him that went out to voters on the day of the run-off July 31. Stockman, like Boone and 60 Plus President James L. Martin, has long supported outright repeal of the death tax.

Steve Stockman promotes BITCOIN to Wall St

From the department of things that a supporter of Wall St. Bailouts (aka. John Cornyn) would never do:

Stockman made an appearance Tuesday night at a party thrown by a new organization called the NYC Bitcoin Center, according to the bitcoin news website newsBTC. (On Thursday, Stockman's campaign tweeted a link to a version of the story on ronpaulforums.com.) A photograph from the party posted to Reddit, and shown above, features Stockman holding a QR code connected to a donation address, according to newsBTC. 

A short video uploaded to YouTube on Tuesday shows Stockman and Nick Spanos, the founder of the NYC Bitcoin Center, walking around Wall Street in New York City. 

"I really think digital currency is more about freedom," Stockman says in the video, which according to the description will be part of a new documentary on digital currency. "Freedom to choose what you do with your money, and freedom to keep your money. Without people influencing it through printing money or regulation."

Highlights:

• "Digital currency is all about freedom."

• If you hold your own wealth, large institutions can't control you.

• The Fed is printing so much money that dollars are going to become worthless.

We're skeptical that BITCOIN, per se, is the answer, but BITCOIN is a critical first step towards greater currency competition.  It's refreshing to see a United States Senate candidate actively pushing back against the Federal Reserve cartel.  That's why we've endorsed Steve Stockman for United States Senate.

Stockman wins CTRA Straw Poll

In the contest over the 2014 Republican nominee for U.S. Senate in Texas one candidate has supported Wall St. Bailouts, the PATRIOT Act, and Obamacare; tonight, the Central Texas Republican Assembly chose the alternative.

In the contest to hold John Cornyn under 50%, Steve Stockman won a clear plurality.  Like Dewhurst in 2012, Cornyn finished second.  Among alternative candidates, Reid Reasor out-polled Dwayne Stovall.

The message was obvious: grassroots conservative Texans (aka. the Tea Party) don't like Wall St. bailouts, the PATRIOT ACT, or Obamacare.  One candidate has voted for all three.  Sorry John Cornyn, you had your chance.

Steve Stockman isn't Jesus.  He doesn't pretend to be.  Steve Stockman might have skeletons in his closet.  So what?!?  Steve Stockman has never voted to support Wall St. Bailouts, the PATRIOT Act or Obamacare.

The 2014 race for the Republican U.S. Senate race in Texas is about substance.  Only one candidate has voted to endorse Wall St. Bailouts, the PATRIOT Act, and Obamacare.  Tonight, Steve Stockman emerged as the clear alternative.

  Robert Vreugde Okay I went to the site and found a quote from a Houston Chronicle article, some anonymous tweets and the accusation that he was a felon because he had been charged with a felony because the cops found some valium in his pants. No attribution to any verifiable source, no date given for the Chron or WAPost quotes, no source for accusations given in the tweets. Also a mention that Steve had been in jail twice - but for what? and when?
  Then the accusation that he had not filled out a financial disclosure - okay that is some meat - could you please give more details? 
  And BTW being charged with a felony is not the same as being a felon. 
  I think Steve Stockman should stay in Congress and not get involved in this demolition derby with John Cornyn. But if this is the best the Cornyn campaign can do via a back door attack, then maybe Senator Cornyn's re-election campaign really is in trouble.
