• Son of a Pastor in a legalistic Church where "God seemed to me like a set of rules and regulations."
• Thought: "if this is Christianity, I don't want to have anything to do with it."

• Started with looking at Porn on the Internet.
• Decided to make money producing it.

• Deceived his wife for three years while producing porn.

• "I often confused God with the people who claimed to represent him."

• Grossed over $50k "the first month I didn't have to hide what we were doing."

As UT President Bill Powers seeks to hold on to his job in the face of a growing admissions scandal where powerful lawmakers and their donors were allegedly given preferential admissions, the new leader of the alumni association is standing by Powers. Former US Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison wrote to alumni this weekend that Powers “is a great leader; he deserves better than this."

Closely aligned with deep-monied interests, Powers has been strongly supported by establishment politicians. After questions about financial malfeasance and legislative clout abuse were raised by a UT regent, Texas House Speaker Joe Straus went about the task of impeaching the regent.

Hutchison, a graduate of UT, took over as the president of the “Texas Exes,” an independent alumni association which lobbies on behalf of UT. She made opposing Perry’s higher education reforms a hallmark of her failed 2010 gubernatorial race. [Emphasis added]

In an email labeled “Urgent State of Affairs at UT-Austin,” Hutchison confirmed that the ultimatum had been issued but decried it as a “travesty.”

“It would cause further tension with legislators regarding UT System, would compound unrest among faculty, students, and alumni, and invoke serious harm to the institution’s reputation in the national spotlight,” wrote Hutchison. “President Powers has advanced the university through many tremendous accomplishments, and has been a great leader; he deserves better than this. This is about our university; it is a treasure that alumni need to protect and we need to stand up and fight for its stature. The University of Texas at Austin deserves better than this.”

She described the leak of information to Breitbart and follow-on news outlets as “unfortunate” and as having “inflamed controversy.”

In her letter, though, Hutchison does not address the substance of the scandals brewing around Powers. Neither Hutchison nor the Texas Exes has called for investigations into claims UT admitted under-qualified students based on their family’s political ties.

 And how, pray tell, did that Governor's race work out for Kay Bailey Hutchison?!?

With all due respect to Kay Bailout, if she wants to re-litigate the 2010 primary (on behalf of Bill Powers), she should expect similar results.

Official Endorsement: Steve Toth for Texas Senate

In 2013, Former Texas Senate Finance committee chairman Tommy Williams shoved a budget down Texans' throats that increased spending by 26%.  Later that year, he resigned under a cloud of corruption.  The special election to replace him concludes August 5th.

In 2012, despite being wildly outspent, Steve Toth knocked off a Joe Straus lieutenant.  This was a crucial victory in the war against Team Straus.  In 2014, once again, Steve's opponent is a Joe Straus lieutenant.

As a member of the Texas House, Steve was a persistent thorn in Joe Straus' side.  He was a reliable force for obstruction where the euphemism "getting something done" usually means something bad.  Steve's endorsement list speaks for itself.

Steve was a leader in exposing CSCOPE, and remains committed to the ongoing game of Whack-a-mole.  He understands the threat, even without expansion, that Medicaid poses to Texas' fiscal future.  We first met Steve last summer, when he was handing out pizza to pro-lifers during the mayhem at the Capitol.

This is not to say Steve is perfect.  While we appreciate his attention to the border situation, we think a lame-duck special session is dangerous.  But that doesn't change the dynamic of this race.

One final note: Steve Toth understands the Old Testament.  We cannot overemphasize how refreshing we find this.  Considering the global economic uncertainty in our near future, we appreciate elected officials who are familiar with the Harbinger.

Early voting opens in two weeks.  It's time to get serious.  Cahnman's Musings unconditionally endorses Steve Toth for Texas Senate!!!

Replacing Bill Powers; An open letter to Governor Perry

Dear Mr. Governor,

First things first, thank you for your tenacity in pursuit of Higher Education reform in Texas.  Your unwavering defense of Wallace Hall's courageous investigation has allowed the investigation to produce fruit.  According to Breitbart Texas, Bill Powers' era $215 million accounting scandals and politicized admissions decisions will come to an end next week.

The time has come to recruit Bill Powers replacement.

We urge you to consider Rush Limbaugh.

For twenty five years, Rush Limbaugh has done more to educate the public than anyone in America.  His radio show reaches more Americans than any other.  And he's effective in Texas:

Recently, Rush has penned two best selling books about American history.  He brings complex topics to life in a way others can't.  Longhorn students would be blessed by his leadership.

Rush Limbaugh understands the financial burden of student loan debt.  He understands how the current Higher education model serves students poorly.  He would make a fantastic spokesman for a $10,000 degree.

Higher education in Texas is at a crossroads.  While the recent scandals were distasteful, they offer an opportunity to advance meaningful reform.  Rush Limbaugh would be an ideal spokesman for those reforms  We strongly urge you to consider him for the coming vacancy in the Presidency at UT - Austin.  Go big or go home.

Kudos to WaPo for digging into county election returns over the past 15 years:

Immigration isn’t turning Texas blue as quickly as you might expect

More importantly, though, there doesn't appear to be any correlation to a county becoming more Hispanic and it voting more heavily Democratic. A graph of the two just looks like a swarm of bees, a big cluster showing no pattern whatsoever

....

Translating that shift bluntly: white Texans will probably die before Hispanic ones, even as more Hispanics -- a younger population -- reach voting age. Which would mean a higher population of Hispanic voters and, going back to the first two graphs, more votes for Democrats.

Or maybe not. A Gallup survey found that Texas Hispanics tended to be more conservative than the population nationally, further complicating the picture.

All we can do is look at how the state evolves over time. Over the past 10 years, the population shift was subtle and the voting change barely noticeable. In 2000, Al Gore won 24 of the state's counties. In 2012, Obama did better. He won 25.

SHELBURNE, VT – The people have voted! Population Media Center, a global leader in entertainment-education for social good, has been chosen to be part of the program line-up at the 2014 South by Southwest Eco (SXSW Eco) conference taking place October 6-8 in Austin, Texas.

SXSW Eco attracts several thousand members of the global community to explore, engage, and co-create solutions for a sustainable world each year. This piqued the interest of Population Media Center’s Texas-based state chapter (PMC-TX) – which works to engage local elected officials, community leaders, and the Texas public on population and sustainability issues, explaining how Population Media Center (PMC) addresses these issues in ways that enhance human health, human rights, the environment, and economic justice.

PMC submitted a proposal for the panel “Women First: Improve Society and Protect the Environment” featuring four female panelists from a diverse group of organizations that focus on entertainment-education, technology for social good and women’s rights and empowerment.

“It is an honor to be part of this event and take a leadership role in convening this panel,” says Keith Annis, the Director of PMC-TX. “SXSW is well known and respected around the world, and the competition to be selected was tough.”

The Magnitude Of Population Growth And Its Consequences

The world’s population is growing by nearly 80 million people per year. While population growth rates have slowed since their peak in the 1960s, the numbers being added to the population each year continue to be huge, in part because of the growth in the numbers of people of reproductive age. At current rates of birth and death, the world’s population is on a trajectory to double in 49 years.

The median projection of population size by the U.N. Population Division envisions that population growth rates will decline over the coming several decades. But even if that median projection is achieved, the number of people expected to be added to the world’s population in the next 50 years will be almost as large as the number added in the last 50 years.

That magnitude of increase, coming on top of the unprecedented growth that has occurred in the last half-century, will be felt in all aspects of life. It will further stress already strained ecological systems and worsen poverty in much of the developing world, thus aggravating threats to international security. [Emphasis added]

Texas House committee receives border operations update

Texas State Capitol -- Earlier this afternoon, the Texas House committee on Homeland Security heard testimony regarding current border security operations.  The hearing was called before Governor Perry announced the 'surge', so it didn't consider questions about appropriating new money beyond the current activity.  Texas DPS director Steve McCraw was the primary witness and spoke first.

The following is transcribed from our notes from the hearing:

• Over 47,000 unaccompanied minors have been picked up in 2014.

• Mexican cartels "did not cause this" but "they are exploiting and leveraging it."

• "We don't enforce immigration;" refer to border patrol instead.

• Center of gravity is Rio Grande Valley.

• Purpose of Operations: "There's a point in cartel business model where they won't take on new risk."
• The purpose is to "increase the risk" on cartels "to the point where they shut down the operation."
• "Decease the motive to move product."
• "Saturation patrols will deter smuggling activities."
• "Create a hostile environment" for the cartels.

• Question from Rep Joe Pickett: Can we send "our own propaganda" to get them not to come?!?
• DPS shouldn't but "it needs to be done."
• Migrant perception -- "Border is porous and they'll get in" and "they'll be allowed to stay and be reunited with family members."

• Texas is the center of the United States...in human trafficking.

• DPS has "better quality assets" than Border Patrol.

• "There's no question we're [DPS] doing less" in other areas of the state because of border operations.

• Syria, Pakistan, Iran, Yemen, Somalia, and Afghanistan among the home countries.
• "Well over 75% are OTM's [Other than Mexicans];" couldn't guess % from terror-friendly countries.

• "About 2000" Border Patrol agents on duty in Texas at any given time.

• Israeli style fence -- Might be worthwhile in certain sectors, but would require lots of support.

An official with the Department of State Health Services spoke about some of the infectious diseases migrants are bringing with them.  While this is certainly cause for concern, most of his testimony gave detailed answers to hypothetical questions that have yet to occur.

Finally, the Mayor and Police Chief of McAllen, TX testified:

• 1000 migrants per week coming through McAllen alone.

• After illegals are released for an immigration hearing, they're 'legal' until the hearing.
• Of course, they never show up for the hearing.

• In McAllen, they get 3 days worth of supplies, then released into the interior of the U.S.
