Austin Chronicle reporter launches sexist broadside against...local Mommy bloggers?!?

For those who've never heard of it, the Austin Moms blog is...exactly what it sounds like.  It's a generally apolitical group blog focused on lifestyle and parenting.  They're not particularly relevant to this author, but we are familiar with them.  FWIW, they have a strong testimony in the appropriate circles.

Austin Sanders, meanwhile, has been the city hall correspondent for the Austin chronicle for about a year.

Anyways, apparently the Moms are participating in an anti-sex trafficking initiative. Furthermore, apparently, as part of this initiative they're working with a PR company that also has clients in the law enforcement community. None of this sounds controversial.

Right?!?

Bottom Line: None of this is surprising. At least, not really. The Austin Chronicle has been the worst of the worst in local media for a long time. Still, even by their standards, going after Mothers and sex trafficking surviors is...quite something.

Tech-industry Sex Trafficking in Seattle Report raises MAJOR questions about Austin's Amazon Bid

Austin and Atlanta share the best odds of landing Amazon's HQ2, says Irish betting site PaddyPower.

Back in October, PaddyPower put Atlanta’s odds of landing Amazon’s $5 billion second headquarters at 2-to-1, beating Austin (3-to-1) and Boston (6-to-1).

But as of Dec. 31, PaddyPower reports that Atlanta and Austin each share a 3-to-1 chance of landing HQ2.

Silicon Valley’s Female Problem was well-known long before the #MeToo movement started toppling piggish men in media, politics and the arts. But emails obtained by Newsweek reveal another sordid corner of the tech sector’s treatment of women: a horny nest of prostitution “hobbyists” at tech giants Microsoft, Amazon and other firms in Seattle’s high tech alley.

The emails from the men, some hoovered up in a sting operation against online prostitution review boards, are all similar, often disguised as replies to wrong addresses.

“I think you might have the wrong email address,” wrote one man from his Amazon work address to a brothel.

The cache of tech company emails were obtained by Newsweek via a public records request to the King County Prosecutor’s Office. Law enforcement authorities have been collecting them from brothel computers over the last few years; some were obtained in connection with a 2015 sting operation that netted high-level Amazon and Microsoft directors.

The cache of emails shared with Newsweek date between 2014 and 2016, and included 67 sent from Microsoft, 63 sent from Amazon email accounts and dozens more sent from some of Seattle’s premier tech companies and others based elsewhere but with offices in Seattle, including T-Mobile and Oracle, as well as many local, smaller tech firms. The men who sent the emails have not been charged, and Newsweek is not identifying them.

The sting arrested 17 men and one woman, but only a director at Amazon and another director at Microsoft opted for a trial. The trial date has been repeatedly pushed back and is now scheduled for March 2018. None of the sex workers involved in those case were charged.

When Newsweek sought comment from Amazon this week, a spokeswoman first asked to see the emails sent by Amazon employees (unlike Microsoft, Amazon had apparently not requested the emails from authorities). Newsweek shared an Excel list with the senders’ names redacted, and when the spokeswoman said she couldn’t comment without seeing more, Newsweek emailed one full email.

Today, Amazon informed Newsweek that it is “investigating” the matter and provided this statement by email: “Amazon’s Owner’s Manual clearly states that, ‘It is against Amazon’s policy for any employee or Contingent Worker to engage in any sex buying activities of any kind in Amazon’s workplace or in any work-related setting outside of the workplace, such as during business trips, business meetings or business-related social events.’ When Amazon suspects that an employee has used company funds or resources to engage in criminal conduct, the company will immediately investigate and take appropriate action up to and including termination. The company may also refer the matter to law enforcement.”

Now, obviously, you don't want to paint too broad of a brush.  63 bad actors out of a company with over 500,000 employees isn't necessarily terrible.   But we're not talking about trying to launch a boycott or take-down the company.

But it is to say that we need a full and complete accounting of what happened BEFORE they receive any sort of "incentive" package to move here (and our previously stated questions about the merits of the project still apply).

Finally, we'll note Amazon's response sounds familiar.

Bottom Line: This question needs to be addressed (the sooner the better).

Texas House committee receives border operations update

Texas State Capitol -- Earlier this afternoon, the Texas House committee on Homeland Security heard testimony regarding current border security operations.  The hearing was called before Governor Perry announced the 'surge', so it didn't consider questions about appropriating new money beyond the current activity.  Texas DPS director Steve McCraw was the primary witness and spoke first.

The following is transcribed from our notes from the hearing:

• Over 47,000 unaccompanied minors have been picked up in 2014.

• Mexican cartels "did not cause this" but "they are exploiting and leveraging it."

• "We don't enforce immigration;" refer to border patrol instead.

• Center of gravity is Rio Grande Valley.

• Purpose of Operations: "There's a point in cartel business model where they won't take on new risk."
• The purpose is to "increase the risk" on cartels "to the point where they shut down the operation."
• "Decease the motive to move product."
• "Saturation patrols will deter smuggling activities."
• "Create a hostile environment" for the cartels.

• Question from Rep Joe Pickett: Can we send "our own propaganda" to get them not to come?!?
• DPS shouldn't but "it needs to be done."
• Migrant perception -- "Border is porous and they'll get in" and "they'll be allowed to stay and be reunited with family members."

• Texas is the center of the United States...in human trafficking.

• DPS has "better quality assets" than Border Patrol.

• "There's no question we're [DPS] doing less" in other areas of the state because of border operations.

• Syria, Pakistan, Iran, Yemen, Somalia, and Afghanistan among the home countries.
• "Well over 75% are OTM's [Other than Mexicans];" couldn't guess % from terror-friendly countries.

• "About 2000" Border Patrol agents on duty in Texas at any given time.

• Israeli style fence -- Might be worthwhile in certain sectors, but would require lots of support.

An official with the Department of State Health Services spoke about some of the infectious diseases migrants are bringing with them.  While this is certainly cause for concern, most of his testimony gave detailed answers to hypothetical questions that have yet to occur.

Finally, the Mayor and Police Chief of McAllen, TX testified:

• 1000 migrants per week coming through McAllen alone.

• After illegals are released for an immigration hearing, they're 'legal' until the hearing.
• Of course, they never show up for the hearing.

• In McAllen, they get 3 days worth of supplies, then released into the interior of the U.S.

"Substantial Inter-operability Challenges" impede "unity of command" on Texas Border

[Author's note: Today's hearing covered both border security and second amendment issues; this post will cover border security, we'll cover the second amendment in a separate post.]

Texas State Capitol -- Earlier today, we attended an interim hearing of the Texas Senate committee on Agriculture, Rural Affairs, and Homeland security.  It was the most depressing and hilarious event we've attended in awhile.  It highlights how government can't even get the things it's supposed to do right.

The two quotes in the title were from Brigadier General Patrick Hamilton (Texas National Guard).  In other words, you have a bunch of state and federal agencies with different sources of funding and accountable to no one not talking to each other and accomplishing nothing.  This creates a situation where the cartels are able to monitor our communications, but friendlies in different government agencies cannot communicate with each other.

Next up were Tom Krampitz (General Council, Texas Border Prosecutors Unit) and Jaime Esparza (District Attorney, El Paso County), who outlined the efforts of prosecutors in the border region.  There are now 20 prosecutors embedded with DPS in South Texas.  Esparza detailed efforts to get the various agencies communicating, which didn't happen before 2009.  We suppose this is progress, but mostly we find this a textbook example of what a former Texas Governor called "the soft bigotry of low expectations."  To his credit, Krampitz said they didn't need more money and that further appropriations would probably go to waste.

During public testimony, we were struck by the plight of Alton Moore.  Mr. Moore, who grew up outside McAllen, moved to Austin two years ago when he had to abandon his 25 acre ranch a mile from the border.  According to Mr. Moore, the cartels have overwhelmed the property to the point that it's no longer economically feasible to maintain.  Mr. Moore explained that "the special operations are fruitless, they only catch 10%" of trafficked persons or drugs.  Unfortunately, in his view (with which we concur), "the only people making money from the drug war are the cartels and cops."

Several members of the Texas Border Volunteers relayed their experiences.  Multiple members reported seeing foreign military units moving at night in South Texas.  It's also worth noting that Chinese is now the third most common language spoken in the area.

One final note: we were struck by the praise several people offered for the Office of the Governor.  This stands in marked contrast to the bogus accusations that were thrown at Governor Perry during his last Presidential campaign.  Rick Perry remains the best Governor in America.

Today's hearing illustrated the mess on our border.  The state of Texas deserves credit for stepping into the void where the federal government has willfully failed.  Unfortunately, until the assets we have already deployed are utilized properly, any expansion of 'border security' operations will be pointless.

Battleground Texas Promotes Sex Trafficking

The other day, Greg Abbott outlined his proposal to increase security on the Texas-Mexico border.  Abbott's proposal expands a successful Perry administration policy.  While insufficient, Abbott's proposal is a worthy stopgap measure given Barack Obama's willful failure to secure the border.

During his remarks, Abbott made a comment how Barack Obama's deliberate failures have enabled third world levels of corruption in parts of South Texas.

Unable to discuss Barack Obama's premeditated failure, Obama's campaign lackeys at Battleground Texas chose cheap racial demagoguery instead:

Unfortunately, the third world practices Barack Obama, Wendy Davis, and Battleground Texas promote have very real consequences:

For many migrants trying to reach the U.S. from Mexico, the border region is a terrifying, lawless place, and their fear is often justified. Things are so bad in Matamoros, a border city just across the Rio Grande from Brownsville, Texas, that last month the city's police were stripped of their weapons, ordered off the streets and replaced by soldiers.

Gang members openly sell pirated gasoline that they've stolen from government pipelines, and lookouts for the drug cartels monitor the south bank of the Rio Grande to make sure no one tries to swim across who hasn't paid for the privilege.

While the overall number of migrants trying to cross illegally into the U.S. has dropped dramatically over the past few years, the trip has grown more dangerous, as some of Mexico's most brutal drug cartels now earn millions of dollars each year from the extortion and smuggling of migrants. Last year, hundreds of migrants went missing or were killed in Mexico, and more than 20,000 were kidnapped.

"There's a lot of criminals at the river. You have to pay to cross the river," Perez says. "And on the other side you have to be careful of the Border Patrol. And there's a lot of crime here in Matamoros right now."

He says the gangs want $100 per person just to let migrants swim across the river; it's $3,000 if you want to get delivered to Dallas. Perez can't even afford to jump into the water.

The drug cartels have turned the extortion of migrants into a highly sophisticated, and lucrative, criminal enterprise. Migrants are abducted and held in so-called safe houses until family members pay ransoms of hundreds or even thousands of dollars for their release. The migrants are regularly beaten.

"In the past, ordinary smugglers abandoned them, extorted them; but now physical abuse is the norm. And it's very strong and very serious," Gallardo says.

"We've had cases where young girls, teenagers, are raped. Cases where migrants are injured when they're attacked either with firearms or a knife. There's the problem of them being used to smuggle drugs across or money," Pena says.

The New York Times Gets One Right

Once a year, the New York Times publishes something with which we wholeheartedly agree; Saturday's Nick Kristof column takes that honor for 2013:

NASHVILLE — WHEN men paid Shelia Faye Simpkins for sex, they presumably thought she was just a happy hooker engaging in a transaction among consenting adults.

It was actually more complicated than that, as it usually is. Simpkins says that her teenage mom, an alcoholic and drug addict, taught her at age 6 how to perform oral sex on men. “Like a lollipop,” she remembers her mom explaining.

There’s a common belief that pimps are business partners of prostitutes, but that’s a complete misunderstanding of the classic relationship. Typically, every dollar earned by the women goes to the pimp, who then doles out drugs, alcohol, clothing and food.

Of course, there are also women (and men) selling sex voluntarily. But the notion that the sex industry is a playground of freely consenting adults who find pleasure in their work is delusional self-flattery by johns.

Sex trafficking is one of the most severe human rights violations in America today. In some cases, it amounts to a modern form of slavery.

Human sex trafficking is alive and well in the state of Texas.  In other words, eleven and twelve year onld girls are getting raped and the Feds are covering it up.  Last month, we were at this talk with Brandon Darby:
