Pete Sessions is a liability that should have been dealt with YEARS ago

"As a dog returns to his own vomit,
So a fool repeats his folly."
Proverbs 26:11

This isn't good, via the Texas Observer:
Golf outings at an exclusive country club. A catered suite at a Dallas Cowboys game. Swanky ski resort getaways in the mountains of Utah. Life is good for Congressman Pete Sessions.

As the chair of the House Rules Committee, Sessions is Congress’ gatekeeper — the man who controls if and when legislation is considered on the House floor. And he’s used his position, aided by an under-the-radar political action committee (PAC), to finance a pampered life among fellow elites.

A new report released this week by Issue One and the Campaign Legal Center, campaign-finance reform groups based in Washington, D.C., explores how leadership PACs — special pots of money meant to help other politicians and build influence — have become lawmakers’ “preferred ticket to luxurious living.”

Leadership PACs are an obscure fundraising tool ostensibly used to support other candidates directly, or to subsidize a lawmaker’s travel while campaigning for other candidates. In other words, they can cover some peripheral expenses a lawmaker’s campaign account can’t. But with next to no spending restrictions and little oversight, politicians are increasingly using the money as a personal slush fund for extravagant flourishes and expensive events. In fact, less than half of the $160 million that leadership PACs spent in the 2016 cycle — about $74 million — actually went toward other federal candidates or political committees.

Sessions is spotlighted in the report for using his creatively named leadership PAC, People for Enterprise Trade and Economic Growth (PETE) PAC, to finance expensive golf outings. But a closer look at PAC records shows that he’s also spent hundreds of thousands of dollars at some of the most luxurious places in the country while he wines and dines corporate donors.

Sessions’ PAC hasn’t given more than 50 percent of its funding to other candidates or PACs since 2013 and has instead spent more and more of its funds on courting donors, according to the report. For instance, in the 2013-14 cycle, PETE PAC spent about 45 percent of its money — $303,000 — on political contributions and about 50 percent on fundraising expenses. For 2015-2016, the PAC spent 49.8 percent – $214,100 — on contributions to other candidates.

“The way you raise funds is to make donors feel comfortable and give them an experience, which is fine, but the problem is that a comparably small percentage of the funds raised for leadership PACs are going to other candidates,” said Brendan Fischer, director of federal reform for the Campaign Legal Center. “It gives the appearance that you’re holding fundraisers at a high-end steakhouse to bankroll the fundraiser you’re holding at a Cowboys game.”
The Observer article goes on to detail the PETEPAC's various events and expenditures that have benefited the Congressman; we strongly recommend you read the whole thing here.

Hillary won Sessions' district.  It's not a secret Sessions' district is the most likely Texas CD to flip this fall.  This type of corruption drives voters insane.

Sessions has had challenges almost every cycle for the past decade.  Unfortunately, on each occasion, Dallas did what it usually does.  That being said, no regrets on our end about supporting previous challenges to Sessions.

[Note: That none of Sessions' previous challengers found this scandal hiding in plain sight is an act of political malpractice.]

Bottom Line: This was SO predictable.  It was ALSO preventable.  Now it's too late.

About running for Congress: An open letter to Don Huffines

"Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him;
Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way,
Because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass."
Psalm 37:7

Dear Senator Huffines,

Earlier this week, Quorum Report reported:

Sen. Don Huffines, R-Dallas, told Quorum Report on Tuesday that he is “looking at all options” when asked if he plans to run against Rep. Pete Sessions, a senior Republican congressman from Big D.
“I can’t rule it out,” Huffines said when asked whether he is taking a serious look at the seat held by Sessions. “That would be my comment.”

Under no circumstances should you run against Pete Sessions; we need you to stay in your current position until at least the end of your term.

Here's why: If you were to be elected to Congress, that would trigger a special election for your Texas Senate seat.  For obvious reasons, that's a prospect the lobby would relish.  You remember better than anyone how close your last election was.

A special election where we're playing defense is a headache the grass-roots doesn't need.  It's tailor made for John Carona to sneak back.  We need to stay on offense.

Make no mistake: Pete Sessions is a jerk.  Ironically enough, the last time you and I spoke at length was the day after his buffoonish April townhall.  But that doesn't mean you're the right person to run against him.  Even if Katrina doesn't run, Sessions is going to have one or more opponents.  Why risk a perfectly good Texas Senate seat for a race that could already see 3-5 candidates?!?

As March's debate over the margins tax proved, we need you in the Texas Senate. Please stay put.  Besides, Austin is a MUCH nicer place to spend time than Washington D.C.

Sincerely,
Adam Cahn
Austin, TX

P.S. That being said, if you wanted to to piggyback off of the name recognition you already have in Dallas County, do feel free to pitch this race to your brother.

Katrina Pierson leads Jedi Counterattack

"And it shall be, when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the mulberry trees, then you shall advance quickly. For then the Lord will go out before you to strike the camp of the Philistines.”
2 Samuel 5:24

Speaking of Returning Jedi, Let's go Katrina:

Highlights:

  • "Battleground Texas takes a beating and Texas voters overwhelmingly support a BOLD border security and anti-Illegal Immigration platform."
  • "However, the one person who could allow these anti-American children policies to remain on the books is current House speaker from San Antonio, Joe Straus."
  • "Under Straus, more bills sponsored by Democrats than Republicans were passed last session, even though Republicans held the majority."

Katrina Pierson rips Corporate Food Stamp Welfare

"Dishonest scales are an abomination to the Lord,
But a just weight is His delight."
Proverbs 11:1

GREAT appearance the other day on Cavuto:

HIGHLIGHTS:
  •  "This is, in effect, cheating."
  • Wal-Mart spends $7 million a year on Lobbyists.
  • "This is supposed to be about food and nutrition, not KFC and Taco Bell."
-----

The windfall profits J.P. Morgan Chase makes operating the debit cards are another example of egregious corporate welfare in the food stamp program.

-----

Finally, we find it hilariously ironic that, when we (briefly) saw Kat last weekend, we were late to the event because we were shopping at Wal-Mart!!!

Democrat Dallas County Judge Commends Katrina Pierson

"For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope."
Jeremiah 29:11

History Lesson: Pete Sessions' Subprime Mortgage Bribe

"And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me remove the speck from your eye’; and look, a plank is in your own eye? Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye."
Matthew 7:3-5

Team Sessions' is now attacking Katrina's personal finances, how cute:
Texas Rep. Pete Sessions, a top member of the House GOP leadership, received a VIP mortgage from defunct lender Countrywide Financial Corp., making him the fourth current member of the House who has acknowledged getting a sweetheart deal.

Sessions’ office would not comment on the amount of the loan or when it was issued, although press reports state that it was a 2007 transaction worth as much as $1 million. The loan does not appear on any of Sessions’ annual financial disclosure reports on file with the House Clerk’s office. Lawmakers and senior aides must file such reports each year, but they are allowed to leave off information regarding personal homes or property that do not generate any income.

....

House ethics rules require that lawmakers and staff may only accept “loans from banks and other financial institutions on terms generally available to the public.”

Sessions, the chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, joins Reps. Ed Towns (D-N.Y.), Elton Gallegly (R-Calif.) and Buck McKeon (R-Calif.) in acknowledging being notified that they received below-market loans from Countrywide’s VIP program. The program was put in place by Angelo Mozilo, former Countrywide CEO, and it was designed to boost the company’s standing with celebrities, athletes, and well-connected business and government officials.

Sen. Kent Conrad (D-N.D.) and former Sen. Christopher Dodd (D-Conn.) also received special loans through Countrywide’s VIP unit. No charges were ever filed against the two senators, but the Senate Ethics Committee said both Conrad and Dodd “should have exercised more vigilance” in their dealings with Countrywide.
But why discuss the favorable terms a sitting Congressman got on a seven figure deal when you can raise lame questions about a single Mom?!?

Where does Pete Sessions live?!?

Some intrepid Tea Partiers in North Texas snooped around the address Pete Sessions listed on his Congressional filing form, results aren't good:

One of these arrests is not like the others....

[Full Disclosure: Your author has been arrested four times for alcohol related misdemeanors, but we never led police on a high speed chase.]

"He pulls a knife, you pull a gun; he sends one of yours to the hospital, you send one of his to the morgue."
The Untouchables

It started when John Cornyn and Karl Rove went after Steve Stockman on a 30 year old drug charge:
He has been jailed more than once, and was charged with a felony after one such incident when authorities found valium in his pants.
It continued when Pete Sessions went after Katrina Pierson over a 17 year old petty larceny:
On and off the campaign trail, congressional candidate Katrina Pierson sometimes discusses the hardscrabble background that she says ultimately made her a conservative firebrand.

The troubles in her youth, records show, included an arrest for shoplifting.

In 1997, five days before her 21st birthday, Katrina Pierson, then named Katrina Lanette Shaddix, was arrested on a charge of theft of greater than $50 and less than $500.
Which brings us to Skip Ogle.

Now who, pray tell, is Skip Ogle?!?

Skip Ogle is a cable television lobbyist running against Matt Schaefer in the primary for Texas House District 6 (near Tyler).  He's closely aligned with Joe Straus.  He's also the guy who led Dallas Police on a High Speed Chase:

It should go without saying that a high speed chase in an urban area is a much bigger threat to public safety than petty larceny or a couple Valiums.

The Texas Republican establishment brought this upon itself.  Texans expect our elected representatives to enact conservative public policies or be held accountable.  During accountability season, we'd prefer to stick to the issues.  But if John Cornyn and Pete Sessions want to drag ancient personal history into these campaigns, then Joe Straus' handpicked recruits will have to endure more scrutiny.  For every Valium or petty larceny of ours, we'll just have to expose every reckless, urban, high-speed police chase of yours....

Katrina Pierson wows the public

The Lexington Libertarian details a recent Katrina Pierson appearance:
We, a band of concerned citizens, gathered in a church in a small Texas City, Rowlett, to greet, meet and listen to Katrina Pierson who is challenging Rep. Pete Sessions for the Republican Congressional nomination in the 32nd District of Texas.

After some meet and greet mingling she stood before us to tell her story. My jaw literally dropped, my mouth hung open and my eyes moistened.

She told us that her mother was pregnant with her at the age of 14 years. She was raised on welfare. She herself was pregnant at 19, married and divorced quickly. Her mother succumbed to the drug culture. It was her Grandmother who helped raise Katrina and who helped Katrina raise her son. She was involved in a bad car crash. She had her youthful brush with the law.

It took her ten years to graduate from college but not before her senior paper was destroyed in her computer that literally caught fire. She had to sit down and do it all over with only days left for submission. And in the midst of all that her Grandmother died and she was all alone, a single mother with a son to take care of and school to finish.

She told us she had a good friend who was a single mother like herself who worked at Taco Bell but that just wasn’t enough money to get by. So her friend applied for food stamps but the government said you make too much money to qualify, but if you go on welfare we can give you food stamps, housing assistance and all sorts of help.

Katrina vowed that she would not be trapped in the welfare maze.

She told us, “I clawed my way out of poverty. I did it on my own. I could only have done this in America. I would not have survived anywhere else.”

“I LIVED IT,” she went on to say. “I understand what it’s like to struggle.” And the Democrat redistribution model of government dependency is not the way to go, she said in so many words.

OMG! You could have heard a pin drop. Now here is a real person, one who has fought the good fight, been knocked down, got up, dusted herself off and got knocked down again only to get up again to fight another day. Now here is a woman who has suffered but is stronger as a result. Here is a woman who knows what life is all about. Here is the real, deal who isn’t buying government dependence.

But make it she did. Pierson became a Hospital Level 1 Administrator. She raised her son well, who is today 17 years old. She founded the Garland Tea Party. She has been Neil Cavuto’s Privacy Expert on FOX News for the last 5 years.

Pete Sessions repeats Dewhurst's mistake

You know it's primary season in Texas by the lame personal attacks on Katrina Pierson:
In 1997, five days before her 21st birthday, Katrina Pierson, then named Katrina Lanette Shaddix, was arrested on a charge of theft of greater than $50 and less than $500.

Pierson, who is running against Dallas Rep. Pete Sessions in the March 4 Republican primary, acknowledges the mistake. She told police then, and repeated recently, that she was talked into shoplifting by a friend.

“Like an idiot, I went along for the ride,” Pierson said in a recent interview.

She and the other woman were accused of trying to lift nine pieces of women’s clothing from a J.C. Penney store in Plano. They stuffed the clothes into shoe boxes in a clumsy, failed heist.

According to a Plano police report, Pierson said she and the woman with her, Laura Elizabeth Nelson, told police they needed the clothes for jobs they were trying to obtain.
Yawn, although (ironically) a lame personal attack on Katrina helped sink David Dewhurst's 2012 campaign:
A conservative activist from Garland who appeared in GOP Senate hopeful Ted Cruz’s first TV spot called a decorated, wounded military veteran “deformed” in a comment on Twitter on Saturday.

Katrina Pierson also protested that Cruz rival David Dewhurst was exploiting medically retired Marine Capt. Daniel P. “Dan” Moran of Cypress, by featuring him in the lieutenant governor’s introductory video at the state Republican convention in Fort Worth.

....

She said, though, that her grandfather, an Army combat veteran of the Korean war, told her that “any time they use vets in a political situation like that, it was very hurtful.” She said she doesn’t back down from opining that Dewhurst’s video was “in real poor taste.” And Pierson noted that Moran was appointed to the Veterans Commission by Gov. Rick Perry, which required Senate confirmation. Dewhurst presides over the Senate.
Substitute the name Sessions for Dewhurst and Adrian Murray's response from 2012 remains apt:
Is this amateur hour in the Dewhurst campaign bunker?
If Pete Sessions 2014 is determined to repeat Dewhurst's 2012 campaign, at least we'll know for sure if Katrina is a secret red Chinese tire manufacturer....

Katrina Pierson makes national news

From U.S. News and World Report:
Pierson, who has a complimentary quote from Cruz splashed on the homepage of her website, flexed her insurgent moxie by pledging to oppose John Boehner as House speaker.

“I do support replacing John Boehner as speaker. I think his leadership has gone completely against the grain of what the mainstream Republicans on the ground feel,” she told reporters during a question-and-answer session with the candidates.

Sessions adviser Brad Todd summarily dismissed Pierson's chances, quipping, "She’s so far behind she’d need airfare to catch up."

Katrina Pierson battles princes of Hip-Hop

Just found this video of Katrina Pierson on friggin B.E.T. from a year and a half ago:

Highlights:
  • "It's a breakdown in the home, it's a breakdown in Parenting."
  • "The ultimate responsibility is on the parent."
  • "Unfortunately, we do have a breakdown in the home, which is why I'm participating in the Tea Party movement."
  • Different parts of the culture work together and the hip-hop culture undermines black family culture.
  • The "N-word" - If you can't use it at work, you probably shouldn't use it at home.
Conservatives often talk about how we need to engage the culture and minority 'outreach.'  Katrina went into the lion's den, on friggin B.E.T., to counter two rappers who (had they sold their souls a little faster in the 1990's) could have been just as big as Jay-Z.  She slayed the twin beasts of Hip-Hop culture and welfare-state Marxism in one blow.  In a month, we have the opportunity to send this same person TO CONGRESS!!!  Or we can RePete the mistakes of the past....

Choose wisely, CD-32, choose wisely.

Rafael Cruz, Katrina Pierson, and progressive fits!!!

From the Burnt Orange Report:
Meanwhile, in "OMG why is this a thing?" news, Ted Cruz's father, who has made himself into some sort of self-styled Tea Party darling owing to his experiences fleeing Cuba for Canada, has endorsed the Tea Party challenger to Congressman Pete Sessions.

Cruz Sr. joined Michele Malkin at an event in Dallas to endorse Katrina Pierson, who is running against Sessions, the former chair of the NRCC. Amusing, the Dallas County Republican Party chair was quick to note that this endorsement would not help Pierson, and that the endorsement did not amount to one from Senator Ted Cruz.

With all due respect to the man from the DCRP, we can let Ted speak for himself, or let his silence speak volumes, as it does in the race between Congressman Steve Stockman and Senator John Cornyn.

In the meantime, I don't know about you guys, but I'm not sure a bunch of Canadians and Cubans should be telling us Americans how to live our lives.
Congrats, go Katrina!!!

The Clash of the Bobs

Cahnman's Musings just received the following press release:
Bob Hall Announces State Senate Bid to Unseat Long-time Incumbent
Excessive, misdirected spending and corporate welfare have to go in Austin.

CANTON – During Monday night’s Canton TEA Party meeting, Canton TEA Party Chairman Bob Hall announced his campaign for Texas State Senate District 2. He enters the Republican Primary race against incumbent District 2 Senator, Robert Deuell.

Hall is a graduate of The Citadel; served as a Captain in the US Air Force, Space and Missile Systems Command; holds a commercial pilot license, and is a long-time business-owner with clients in multiple states.

Hall told the excited crowd, “Our Texas government has grown too big and spends too much of the taxpayers' money. The incumbent legislators we trusted in the past have put us on a course that is unsustainable. Our state government is too big, regulates too much, spends too much on things that are not the core constitutional functions of state government, doles out favors to special interests, has too much debt, and relies too much on federal dollars for the state budget. This weakens our great state.

Conservatives must work together to reclaim our state government for future generations. This election is about our children and grandchildren. We must change the legacy we are leaving them, and the only way that will happen is by replacing the incumbents with true conservatives who care more about future generations than they do about just getting themselves re-elected.

I will work to bring real meaning to the core principles of limited government, fiscal responsibility, personal responsibility, the rule of law and state sovereignty. I am not a professional politician and have never held a public office. However, I once answered the
call to serve my country in the military, and I am now ready to serve in the Texas legislature as the true conservative Senator of Senate District 2.”
Cahnman's Musings has met Bob Hall on multiple occasions.  We've always found him to be a solid citizen.  We do not, however, know him as well as Konni Burton or Katrina Pierson, so this isn't an official endorsement (yet!).

Bob Deuell, the incumbent, is a leading practitioner of the pro-life, second amendment two step.  No one denies that Deuell helped get HB 2 across the finish line last summer, but his record on government spending is atrocious.  That Bob Deuell is an ally of the departed and disgraced Tommy Williams should tell you everything you need to know about Bob Deuell.

This race will hinge on pro-lifers.  While Bob Hall is just as pro-life as Bob Deuell, he wasn't in the Texas Senate to vote for HB 2.  If pro-life groups continue their myopic and short-sited support for pro-life incumbents, the profligate culture of the Texas Legislature will continue.  If pro-lifers stay neutral in a race where either candidate will be excellent on their issues, the Texas Senate could see a major step in the right direction.  Either way, this will be an interesting race to watch.

OFFICIAL ENDORSEMENT: Our First Campaign Contribution of Election 2014

Earlier tonight, Cahnman's Musings attended a fundraiser for Katrina Pierson's U.S. House campaign.  We gave the candidate a (very) modest donation.  It was an easy call for a fantastic candidate.

Katrina spoke in more depth about her background than we'd previously heard. Born to a teenage mother who chose life, Katrina was also a teenage mother who chose life.  This makes sense, considering the last time we saw Katrina was at the Capitol during the abortion debate.

Having grown up in a family on welfare, Katrina was determined not to fall back into that trap when she had her own son at 19.  Katrina did things the hard way, but the right way.  It took her a decade to graduate college (working two jobs most of that time), but she made it without blood money from Washington D.C. or Austin.

Having survived the welfare system, Katrina is determined to promote economic opportunity.  Katrina understands that a strong education is the key to economic success, and that local control is the key to a strong education.  Thus, Katrina's #1 policy objective is to remove the Federal government from education.

Cahnman's Musings wishes we'd recorded Katrina's remarks; unfortunately, our phone was in our bag in the other room.

Katrina Pierson is one of those people (like Toby Marie Walker) we're not sure when we met.  We've been friends on Facebook for years, and we met face-to-face along the way.  We're honored to endorse her campaign and support it financially.

Katrina Pierson is currently running for the United States House in the 32nd district of Texas against the linguini spined Pete Sessions; you can support her campaign here.

Could Pat Gray successfully challenge John Cornyn?!?

On tonight's television broadcast, Glenn Beck vowed to find a primary challenger to John Cornyn; this gives us an idea:

How about Pat?!?

One thing Glenn Beck will discover, if he's serious about finding a challenger to Cornyn, is that none of the obvious candidates wants to run:

  • We asked Louie Gohmert last summer (at Restoring Love): he said no.
  • We asked Rafael Cruz in April: he said he was too old.
  • We haven't personally spoken to Ron Paul, but a source who shall remain anonymous told us he wasn't interested in this race the same day we posted the blog linked above.
All of the folk listed above have been asked, all have said no.

Which brings us back to Pat.

Pat would enter this race with instant credibility.  Freedomworks already sponsors the radio show and, knowing Freedomworks as we do, we strongly suspect they'd endorse him.  There's your fundraising.

If Glenn Beck is serious about finding a challenger to John Cornyn, he can do a lot worse than the guy sitting next to him during the radio show.
